MECC MSc Field Course, Orkney, 1-7 Oct 2016: 22 students from Heriot-Watt's Edinburgh campus and 27 students from the Orkney campus at ICIT took part in this year's field course. The students were assembled into teams with a variety of expertise, covering biology, environmental science, engineering and economy. The topic this year was to address the problem of overtopping of the Churchill Barriers at Scapa Flow, and to come up with a solution that also incorporated a renewable energy element. The proposals needed a feasibility as well as an environmental impact assessment, and were presented to a panel of experts from relevant industries.
